PINYON CREST SAFETY
Every environment has its own specific safety tips to consider, and Pinyon Crest is no different - except VERY different in some respects - here are some things to help you become familiar. Within the Pinyon Crest neighborhood we have PCERT (Pinyon Crest Emergency Response Team) Which is a volunteer leadership to organize and provide education, awareness, and preparedness training to Pinyon Crest residents to enable being self-reliant in situations of urgency and emergency - for more info go to the PCERT website.
Being that we are about 12 miles up a steep, winding road from the closest city, it might take longer to receive relief. Also, we have more opportunities to interact with a rattle snake, tarantula, or even coyote.

WHO TO CALL IN AN EMERGENCY
911 vs local Sheriff
This Mountain Disaster Preparedness Cheat Sheet is developed specifically for "mountain residents" with our particular conditions in mind.
Refer to the Incident Information System website for real-time fire information updated by the BLM. Refer to their Support Guide for details on how to use it.
SNAKE BITES
Know what to do you may want to PRINT THIS to keep handy and take the time to familiarize yourself with First Aid from the Mayo Clinic.
At Pinyon Crest we have more positive experiences than negative with the snakes, understanding how they help control our rodent population and how to co-exist can be helpful, see: Snakes are Our Friends PDF.
FOREST FIRES
You can get information on a large scale at the U.S. Forest Service inciweb site no a national scale, then simply zoom into the specific area in which you have interest, click on the fire icons you see to learn more about each specific fire.
Also you should familiarize yourself with the brush clearing recommendations and services for your home and property. The best defense is prevention.

According to the local Fire Department Station 30 staff, the best practice in case of a fire is to call 911 because they will dispatch the closest available responder. It is IMPORTANT to be clear when providing your address to state that it is in Pinyon Crest since Pinyon Pines and other neighboring communities also use some of the same/similar street names which can cause confusion and a delay in the help you need.

BRUSH CLEARING YOUR PROPERTY
This isn't just about landscaping and looking lovely, but rather how our xeric landscapes here in Pinyon Crest come with a certain responsibility to maintain and help with prevention in the event of a fire.
There are several local people for hire to do the clearing, you can find them listed on the Resident Resources page or simply ask neighbors who they used recently, either by joining our Facebook group.
Use the Mountain Communities Fire Safe Council for getting your property cleared with grant money. There is a grant every year which can pay up to 80% of the total cost if you get in before the grant is depleted.

EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS
Given the remote nature of our location, in the event of an earthquake down the hill we may need to be self-reliant until the needs of those down the hill are first satisfied, roads are passable and they can reach us. This could be for days, weeks or worse depending on the scale of the quake or other disaster. Be prepared!
Visit the Pinyon Crest Emergency Response Team page to see what members of Pinyon Crest have as informational resources and events to help you be more prepared.
